The Camino de Santiago with a Dog, from Sarria

Sarria is the ideal starting point for walking the Camino de Santiago with your pet: about 118 km of the Camino Francés (French Way), divided into five stages of 20 to 26 km, mostly on dirt tracks through oak and chestnut woods, stone villages and small Galician rivers — far kinder on paws than asphalt.

The hardest part of walking with an animal — finding somewhere to sleep — is solved before you travel: every place on the itinerary accepts pets, and your luggage is transferred from one stage to the next, so you walk light and have room in your backpack for their water and treats.

Before you set off, it is worth preparing your companion with longer walks in the preceding weeks, bringing an up-to-date vaccination record and the health documents required for travel, especially if your pet is coming from outside the European Union. And plan breaks in the shade on the hottest days — on the Camino de Santiago, the pace is set by both of you.

1

Arrival in Sarria

Check-in at the first pet-friendly accommodation and the first stamp in your pilgrim passport. See how to get to Sarria.

Arrive in Sarria with time for your dog to get used to the new surroundings: a walk along the Sarria River, with grass and shade, is the best way to start. Your first lodging is pet friendly, and your companion already gets a first day of rest. Check the water, the leash and the paperwork: tomorrow the final 100 km begin, together.

2

Sarria → Portomarín · ≈23 km

Villages, oak trees and the 100 km marker.

The stage leaves Sarria along dirt trails, easy on the paws, and climbs through oak trees to the first villages. There are fountains and shady spots throughout the day; carry extra water for your dog and keep the leash short around cattle, which are common in this region. The arrival in Portomarín, over the bridge across the Minho River, ends with a stone staircase that dogs usually climb with enthusiasm.

3

Portomarín → Palas de Rei · ≈25 km

Shady dirt tracks through inland Galicia.

After Portomarín, the Camino climbs through woods and follows packed-dirt trails and country roads, with plenty of shade — ideal for walking with a dog. Take breaks at the village fountains to keep your companion hydrated. In Palas de Rei, your pet-friendly lodging awaits you both for a well-earned rest.

4

Palas de Rei → Castañeda · ≈24 km

Through Melide, with an overnight stay in the Arzúa area.

The stage passes through Melide, where many restaurants with terraces welcome dogs while you try pulpo à feira (Galician-style octopus). The Camino then continues through woods and streams, with water to cool the paws, to Castañeda, in the Arzúa area. On hotter days, it is best to set out very early.

5

Castañeda → A Rúa · ≈26 km

Eucalyptus trees, streams and Santiago drawing ever closer.

A day of streams and shade: the descent to Ribadiso, beside the Iso River, is a good place for your dog to cool off. After Arzúa, the Camino continues through eucalyptus woods and quiet villages to A Rúa, close to O Pedrouzo. With the arrival in Santiago so near, it is a day to walk slowly and enjoy each other's company.

6

A Rúa → Santiago de Compostela · ≈20 km

Monte do Gozo, the first Cathedral towers and Obradoiro Square.

The last stretch passes Monte do Gozo, whose wide lawns are perfect for a break before the descent into the city. In Obradoiro Square, your dog can pose with you for the arrival photo — although animals are not allowed inside the Cathedral. Pick up your Compostela and celebrate: you walked the Camino together.

7

Farewell to Santiago

Breakfast and check-out — or one more night to enjoy the city (see the extras).

Before you leave, enjoy Santiago's parks with your dog: the Alameda, with views of the Cathedral, and Bonaval Park, peaceful and full of paths. If someone in your group wants to attend the Pilgrim's Mass, take turns looking after your four-legged companion.

Spirit and table

Faith and Flavor Along the Camino de Santiago with a Dog

Spiritual dimension

A pilgrimage for two

2027 is a Compostela Holy Year: the Holy Door opens, and the pilgrim who reaches Santiago may receive the plenary indulgence. Walking with a faithful companion by your side gives the silence of each stage a new meaning — and, on arrival, Obradoiro Square belongs to you both. The Pilgrim’s Mass and the Botafumeiro are for the human half of the pair.

Gastronomic dimension

A Galician table, with room for everyone

Pulpo á feira in Melide, Arzúa-Ulloa cheese, caldo gallego and tarta de Santiago to celebrate — often on a terrace where your pet is welcome too. In inland Galicia, nobody is surprised by a four-legged pilgrim.

The founder’s curation

A Camino de Santiago with a Dog Curated by Someone Who Has Walked It Twelve Times

Pablo Machado Soares walked the Camino Francés twelve times before founding Ultreya Travel, and he has lived in Spain for 17 years. For this itinerary, Ultreya’s curation focuses on what matters most to people traveling with animals: accommodation that genuinely accepts pets on every stage, reliable luggage transfers and an itinerary designed so that you both reach Santiago in good shape.
