How to Get to O Cebreiro: A Traveler’s Guide on the Camino Francés

Bus, train, car, or private transfer: every way to get to O Cebreiro from the US, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Ponferrada, or Lugo — so you can start the last 160 km of the Camino Francés at the gateway to Galicia.

Why start the Camino de Santiago in O Cebreiro

O Cebreiro is a small stone village at almost 1,300 meters (about 4,265 feet), right on the border between Castile and León and Galicia. It is the gateway of the Camino de Santiago into Galicia: its pallozas — round stone houses with thatched roofs —, the pre-Romanesque church of Santa María a Real, and the views over the mountains of Lugo make it one of the most magical places on the whole route.

From here to the Cathedral of Santiago it is about 160 km (100 miles), walked in seven stages — ideal if you want more than the 100 km minimum for the Compostela. The practical question is how to get to O Cebreiro, a village high in the mountains. Here are all your options.

First things first: O Cebreiro is not Pedrafita do Cebreiro

This is the most important thing to know. O Cebreiro has no train station and no bus stop. Buses stop in Pedrafita do Cebreiro, a small town by the A-6 highway, 4.3 km (2.7 miles) from O Cebreiro and about 180 meters (590 feet) lower.

  • On foot: the climb from Pedrafita to O Cebreiro takes about an hour. It is doable, but tiring with a suitcase, and not recommended in fog, rain, or late in the day.
  • By taxi: the most practical option, just a few minutes. Book the taxi ahead, especially if you arrive at night or on a Sunday.
  • On-demand bus: the Galician government runs an on-demand service (bus.gal) that must be booked in advance.

“In O Cebreiro, the Camino enters Galicia — and the pilgrim settles into a new rhythm.”

From the US to Spain: which airport to choose

  • Madrid (Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport): the most common choice, with nonstop flights from several US cities. From Madrid, you continue by bus to Pedrafita do Cebreiro or by train to Ponferrada.
  • Santiago de Compostela (Rosalía de Castro Airport): about 150 km (95 miles) from O Cebreiro. There are no nonstop flights from the US, but it is easy to connect through Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, or another European hub — and a direct bus leaves from the airport to O Cebreiro.
  • Lisbon or Porto: some US cities have nonstop flights to Portugal. From Porto, buses to Santiago de Compostela take about 4 hours.

Most flights from the US are overnight. If you are tired, spend a night in Madrid or Santiago before heading up to the mountains.

How to get to O Cebreiro from Madrid

  • Bus (ALSA): buses on the Madrid–Galicia route along the A-6 stop in Pedrafita do Cebreiro. It is the most direct option without a car; from Pedrafita, go up to O Cebreiro by taxi or on foot.
  • Train (Renfe) + bus or taxi: take the train from Madrid to Ponferrada, then a bus to Pedrafita do Cebreiro or a taxi straight to O Cebreiro (about 50 km / 30 miles).
  • Car: about 440 km (275 miles) on the A-6, exiting at Pedrafita do Cebreiro — roughly 4.5 hours.

How to get to O Cebreiro from Santiago de Compostela

  • Direct bus (Monbus): leaves once a day from the Santiago Intermodal Station, stops at the airport, and goes all the way to O Cebreiro. Since there is only one departure, plan your flight with plenty of margin.
  • Train + bus: take the train to Lugo, then a bus to Pedrafita do Cebreiro.
  • Car, taxi, or private transfer: about 150 km (95 miles), roughly 2 hours, with the last stretch on mountain roads.

How to get to O Cebreiro from Ponferrada or Lugo

  • From Ponferrada: about 50 km (30 miles) away. Buses run to Pedrafita do Cebreiro (ALSA and the local company González y de la Riva, which does not run on Sundays and holidays), or you can take a taxi straight to O Cebreiro.
  • From Lugo: ALSA and González y de la Riva buses connect Lugo with Pedrafita do Cebreiro along the A-6.

Ponferrada is worth a stop: the 12th-century Templar Castle is just minutes from the station.

Private transfer: the easiest way to get to O Cebreiro

With the final climb and so few bus departures, a private transfer is the most relaxed option: someone meets you at the airport and drops you off at the door of your lodging, high in the mountains.

With our O Cebreiro self-guided package, the transfer from Santiago airport to O Cebreiro can be added as an option (€ 255 per person). The package already includes your first night in O Cebreiro, so you can arrive calmly and start walking the next day.

Tips for your arrival in O Cebreiro

  • Arrive a day before you start walking. A night in O Cebreiro is also your chance to watch the sunset over the mountains before the first stage to Triacastela.
  • Be ready for mountain weather. At almost 1,300 meters, fog, wind, and cold are common even in summer, and it can snow in winter. Keep a warm layer in your carry-on.
  • Check schedules on the official websites. Buses to the mountains are few and drop on Sundays and holidays. Check ALSA, Monbus, and Renfe before you buy.
  • Get your first stamp. Your pilgrim passport (credencial) can get its first stamp right in the village, by the church of Santa María a Real.
  • Plan for the time difference. Spain is 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 hours ahead of the West Coast.

With a little planning, getting to O Cebreiro is simple — and the reward is starting the Camino Francés in one of the most beautiful places on the route. If you would rather start closer to Santiago, see how to get to Sarria. Buen Camino!
